Can an upsell widget show AI-written reviews?
No. The FTC's 2024 rule bans reviews that pretend to come from someone who does not exist, including AI-generated fake reviews. Show only real reviews from real buyers of that product.
What the rule covers
The rule targets fake or false reviews and testimonials: ones written by people who do not exist, by people with no real experience of the product, or that misstate the reviewer's experience. Buying or selling those reviews is also banned.
What to do in an upsell
Pull reviews only from verified orders of the exact product you are offering. If a product has no reviews yet, say nothing rather than filling the space. A short summary is fine if it reflects the real reviews underneath.
